The Quilt - the story

A couple of years ago at the Homecoming Dinner, Beulah folks were admiring the 1930's quilt given by the women of the church to John Ramsey's mother. The original quilt has name squares which were sold for 5 cents each, and the proceeds went to help reduce the new debt incurred when the building contractor failed to meet his obligations.

Out of the 1930's quilt came the idea of a 2000 quilt with the names of current families. Squares were divided into four name slips, with families donating $5.00 for each family name. The money was pledged to Camp Soaring Wings, an effort by Camp Cedar Ridge to provide summer fun for the children of AIDs parents. "I first thought it would be wonderful to gather 100 names," commented Evelyn Vaughn, "and was thrilled when we passed the 125 mark, then 150 and on beyond 175." Even before the material was bought, Beulah sent Camp Soaring Wings a check for almost $1000.00.

A dedicated group of individuals planned and worked on the quilt. Instrumental in the planning were Helen Crawford, Pat Metzger, Doris Rutledge, Jim Young and the additional people mentioned in this article. The four center squares contain a drawing of Beulah, created by Claudia Zoll. The names were painstakingly embroidered by Marian Caudill, Kristen Jarboe and Anna Priest. The individual squares were pieced by Virginia Gregory and Nancy Leach, and the quilting was done by Elsie Ramsey of Leitchfield, Kentucky.

If you missed the Homecoming display or if you wish to examine the quilt more closely, look for at least a temporary display in Beulah's lobby sometime in the near future; check with the Stewardship Commission for specific details.
