Dear Church Family -
God is good - All the time!
All the time - God is good!
Today we celebrate God's goodness to us in the birth of Evelyn Shain
Flaherty, newborn daughter of Rob and Dee Ann Flaherty, born Monday, 7lbs,
12 oz - all doing fine. Once again, Terry Hargrave got to the hospital
before I did to hold Evelyn (but I am going later this afternoon).
Jim Williams and Bill Banks are both recovering at home from
surgeries and
rehab stays.
Melinda Smith had a brief visit to the hospital for some dizziness,
but is
feeling better today.
November is 1/2 over today (time goes fast when you are having fun!)
and we
are at $246,000 in pledges toward our mission and ministry budget plans for
2006 - and it is only Tuesday of the week. Please please please - if you
have yet to make your pledge, please do so as soon as possible. If you need
another copy of budget materials and the like, let us know. And remember,
you can always email you pledge - confidentially - to Jeannie Koerber -
direct to her computer - jeannie@beulahpresbyterian.com
Our faithful deacons met last night (I could not attend - a rare
migrane,
but I am much better today) and I just talked with Martha Stepro, our Deacon
Coordinator. They are visiting folks in the hospital, at home, our
home-bound folks - and are simply doing amazing work in the pastoral care to
many of our members and friends. Thanks be to God for them all!
This Sunday there is a Congregational meeting - at 11:45 - following
the second
service, and we have several matters before us, so I hope you can attend:
1. Election of officers - Elders, Deacons, Commissioners and Committee
Members. We are still looking for one more elder, and we need some folks to
step up for the Mission and Ministry Funding committee (which helps with the
annual stewardship campaign in the fall).
2. One of two building matters:
a. As you have heard and read in the Beulahtin and bulletin, Fern Creek /
Highview United Ministries has to relocate the Individual and Family
Assistance Center (IFAC) out of the Fern Creek Community Center, effective
January, 2006. We (that is, the Board of Directors, which I now serve on as
a representative of the Fern Creek/Highview Ministerial Association) have
asked for an extension, and are hopeful we will be granted this by the Fern
Creek Chamber of Commerce and Community Association.
b. Beulah has been blessed with property to the west of the sanctuary and
Ramsey Building that has been unused for many years. The proposal from the
Session and the FC/HUM Board is for Beulah to enter into a land lease
relationship with the FC/HUM Board, to lease an "upper" portion of land -
the section of property closest to the intersection of Beulah Church Road
and the entrance to Cedar Creek Apartments and Korger plaza. The lease
agreement would be initially set for $1.00 per year for 10 years.
c. The FC/HUM Board, with help from all of us and all the area churches,
would raise funds and construct a simple building on this property to house
the IFAC operations. The building will be roughly 4,200 square feet, plus a
driveway and parking area.
d. If the FC/HUMC were to cease to exist, Beulah would become owners of the
building.
e. If Beulah Presbyterian Church were to cease to exist (and we already have
a pretty good survival rate since 1868), then the land would become the
property of the FC/HUMC board (and they would already own the building).
f. This and other legal matters are being researched
g. The Congregation and the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky must approve this
lease agreement, per the Book of Order, G-7.0304 Business before a
Congregation: Business to be transacted at meetings of the congregation
shall include the following:G-7.0304a.(4) matters related to buying,
mortgaging, or selling real property and G-G-8.0501Selling or Encumbering
Church Property: A particular church shall not sell, mortgage, or otherwise
encumber any of its real property and it shall not acquire real property
subject to an encumbrance or condition without the written permission of the
presbytery transmitted through the session of the particular church.
3. Two of two building matters (one that has just come up today, Tuesday)
a. The property just north of the church, that has been for sale for some
months, has been sold to a developer and, if the way be clear with the
Planning Commission, a meeting is set for Thursday, and I will attend with
some other folks - the property will include a 3-story Baptist East Medical
Center for Emergencies, Diagnostic Tests and other medical facilities (no
overnight stays), a Wal-Greens (close to the intersection of Bardstown Road
and Beulah Church Road) and a small eating establishment - some of us are
hoping for a Panera Bread!
b. The old house - where the Ellingsworth family once lived, will be taken
down.
c. There is on the property an old stone building which we believe was part
of the original Dorothy Guthrie property where Beulah Church began. There
is an 1841 cornerstone on this building. The developer of the property
proposed to take down the old stone building and construct a retaining wall
along the corner of the property.
d. Jane Tackett mentioned to me some months ago that for only $100,000 we
(Beulah) could have that building moved to our property.
e. Then, some time later, there was some interest in preserving this
building, and Jane mentioned to me that maybe the developer would be willing
to relocate the building on Beulah's property. I called and left this as a
message to the developers lawyer, but got no reply for some weeks.
f. Yesterday the lawyer called, and the developer is willing to relocate the
old stone building and move it to our property, at no cost to Beulah!
g. The proposal for location of this building would be in the area
closer to the parking lot, an area that was donated by Lucille and A.D.
Mattingly, to be used for "church use." The building would essentially be
owned by Beulah.
h. This also, I believe, should be discussed and approved by the
Congregation, so I am requesting that we also deal with this matter at the
meeting this Sunday, November 20, at 11:45.
Lots of stuff to talk about - exciting and hopeful.
Lots of ministry and mission going on - for we are Beulah Presbyterian
Church - Mission and Ministry in Progress.
I hope to worship with you on Sunday.
