CAN YOU AND YOUR GROUP HELP?
Highland Presbyterian Church is using its facility that was formerly Parr’s Rest Nursing Home, and is now known as Highland North, to house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina’s destruction. We are currently looking for churches and organizations which will volunteer to provide daily lunches and dinners for these guests.
Lunch needs to be served from 12:00-1:00 pm and dinner from 6:00-7:00 pm. We are asking for volunteers who can prepare, serve, and clean-up after these meals. The Highland North kitchen is well equipped with dishes, silverware, and cooking equipment. The dishwasher is rather complicated to use, so we are asking that you plan to either hand wash dishes, or bring your own paper products. There is an institutional range-oven, refrigerator and ice machine, as well as a standard microwave available to use. At this time, we have no freezer in the kitchen. We ask that you plan child-friendly meals. We also ask that you leave the kitchen cleaned up and ready for the next group on the following day. Leftovers should be taken with you when you leave. If you want to leave milk, juice, or tea in the refrigerator, however, it would probably be used at a later time. It would also help if you could bring your own dishcloths and dishtowels and take them with you when you leave.
The Highland North building is directly across Highland Avenue from Highland Presbyterian Church on the northeast corner of Cherokee Road and Highland Avenue. There is parking in a lot behind Highland North; however, the entrances to the building are either on Highland Avenue or on Cherokee Road. The kitchen and dining room are on the first floor just past the main lobby of the building. There is a 24-hour security guard on duty if you have any questions when you arrive.
As of the third week in September, we are serving 14 people each day, but we anticipate this number to fluctuate, and could reach 40-50 people. If you commit to a date to provide a meal, you may contact Janet Raderer the day before your assignment and she can provide you with an estimate of how many folks to plan on serving.
If you would like to sign-up for any dates anytime over the next four months, please contact Janet Raderer at 897-5986 or at traderer@bellsouth.net.
Thanks so much for your generosity and willingness to help.
