Dear Ones -

A Happy First Day of September to you and yours on this beautiful day! Can you even believe September is here?

Outside my office window a crew of men is at work doing some tuckpointing and sealing of the capstones and bricks on the east facing wall of the CE building. We have had, apparently for years, a leaking problem in that wall. It was really only discovered this summer when we repainted that inside wall of the room opposite the nursery (thankfully the beautiful painting /mural in the nursery is not damaged). It was painted with 2 coats of Kliz – a water sealing paint, and then 2 coats of white. One day later all the paint had bubbled up. So we had to strip all the new and old paint off, and seal the block with a painted-on form of concrete (just ask Bob and Carla Wood and Bill Flanigan how much fun all that was!). Now the source of the problem on the outside and top of the wall is being fixed – and it will run us about $800 to seal the outside wall and capstones at the top. But I guess since that wall was probably built in 1955 or so, it has served us well for nearly 50 years.

The Preschool Staff had their organizing staff meeting last week, and there have been some changes in that staff. Christie Maier, our returning music teacher, is now also serving as Assistant Director; Jill Poston is a new teacher in the 5-day program; Kim Shircliff is a new teacher in the 3-day program; and Sharon Benson and Jill McLaughlin will be working together co-teachers. The rest of the staff remains the same: Carla Wood as Director, Teachers Rita Brooks, Beverly Burt, Jill McLaughlin, and assistant teachers Cathy Long and Billy Williams. The children (about 70) will start next week on Thursday. Beulah Preschool is a long-time mission and ministry program of our church, founded in 1963, and it continues to enjoy a stellar reputation in the education community of Fern Creek and greater Louisville. As Presbyterians, we have a long tradition in support of education, and that tradition is lived out right here in our Preschool program. Please continue to pray for a safe and successful year for our Preschool – for children and staff and parents too!

As of this morning there is no one that we know of in the hospital (praise God!). As you may know, several are recovering from recent hospitalizations and would so much appreciate a card, phone call, email – to offer a word of support, to remind the person that you are praying for them. As the other, secondary good book says (that would be the Book of Order):

The Church is called to be Christ’s faithful evangelist - demonstrating by the love of its members for one another and by the quality of its common life the new reality in Christ; sharing in worship, fellowship, and nurture, practicing a deepened life of prayer and service under the guidance of the Holy Spirit; (G-3.0300c(2))

Pam Scott is recovering from her recent breathing struggles, and in fact, was in the nursery working last Sunday morning! Yeah Pam.

Cliff Stout is also at home gaining strength.

Bob Tackett is taking his chemotherapy orally, and was here yesterday cutting the “back 40” on the lawn tractor!

Estil Pope is healing from his heart surgery, at home, gaining strength as well.

Betty Banks’ foot is healing – but it does take time.

Jeannie Koerber was out yesterday for a visit. She continues with her doctoring, with good days and not so good days, but more good days of late. She also continues in her application process for disability under our PCUSA benefits plan.

Don Pierce is also home, recovering from some surgery, and he may be facing some additional surgery in the nearer future.

In other news. . . .

Presbyterian Women will have a breakfast and Bible Study (and some circle meetings) will be this Saturday, September 4th at 10:00 in the Fireside Room. You can email the PW moderator Willa Smith at wjksmith@aol.com or the office at office@beulahpresbyterian.com (this comes to Carol in the office).

Labor Day is this Monday, and on Sunday, September 5, 2004 we will be here for worship, at 10:00 – the last Sunday for that time until Memorial Day weekend next May, 2005. There will be no Sunday School that day for children and youth; some adult classes may be meeting so please check. The class that Terry Hargrave leads will not meet. See you all at worship at 10:00 AM. We will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper this day, and take up our regular offering of food and funds for the Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries Individual & Family Assistance Center.

Wednesday Night Program begins one week from today, on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. The schedule and complete details will be in your Beulahtin, which went in the mail yesterday, so check your mailboxes today and tomorrow. Sign up sheets are in the Sunday bulletin for the meals, and we are still looking for folks who would be willing to organize and cook one of the meals. We are starting with Pizza on the 8th, but then want to find some willing and able cooks. The meal can be very simple. Please ask or email Terry if you can help with this need – terry@beulahpresbyterian.com

Men’s Breakfast – and Work Day is here at Beulah on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 8:00 – sign up in the Lobby or right here with a note to Carol – at carol@beulahpresbyterian.com Share a breakfast with other men and then stay and help with some outside and inside projects around the church buildings – and we all quit no later the 12:00!

And then Rally Day is Sunday, September 12, 2004 – “Sunday School is Taking Off – Don’t Miss Your Flight! We will be back to our “regular” schedule beginning this day: Worship at 8:30, Pancake Breakfast followed by a brief time in Sunday School, all starting at 9:30, and then Worship at 10:40!

For those of you here in worship last Sunday, we had 197 in that service! A great crowd. I know a number of you will be traveling this weekend for a little break at the end of the summer, so we may not hit quite that high a number this Sunday – but you never know! For those traveling – safe journeys and blessings on your trip, and return safely to us.

Hoping to see you in Worship this Sunday (10:00), at the PW Breakfast, in our Wednesday Night Program, at the Men’s Breakfast and on Rally Day on September 12 (Worship at 8:30 and 10:40), I remain,

Yours in Christ,

Ken H.
