Dear Ones –

What a night we had last night? Wind, rain, lightning and thunder, trees down and power outages everywhere! As far as we know here in the church office, everyone is safe, though several have no power and trees down. We have two whole trees down here on the church property – two across the road going into the Kroger’s parking lot (by National City Bank) and I’m not sure if they are “our” trees or “their” trees. Jerry P (custodian) put up some yellow tape to block the road, and some cars drove right through it! We had several large limbs down, one blocking the circular driveway, which Jerry and I moved, as well two large limbs near the wooden bridge across the creek – only one of which we could move. One power line to the light by the circular driveway looks stretched to the limit – we’ll see if it works tonight. But the roof is still on, and clean up continues. I hope and pray that the rest of us are safe and well – and that those without power will soon have it restored.

Remember the events coming up this week:

Thursday OAM picnic and ball game.

Friday Gospel Concert here at Beulah, to benefit the Fern Creek / Highview United Ministries (7:00 PM).

Saturday is our “Repair Affair 2” – to finish our work. Anyone is welcome to work – we will meet in the church parking lot at 8:30 and head out to our assigned house.

Sunday worship here at 10:00 and worship at 11:30 at Cedar Ridge Camp – followed by our church picnic. Bring “big” dishes of food to pass around. Remember your bathing suits – we have the pool for two hours in the afternoon!

We have had some of our members facing the loss of a loved one – part of our extended family:

Walter Frank's brother, Thomas Lee, died at the age of 61 – not old at all. Calling and Visitation is tomorrow, Thursday, 1 to 8, and the Funeral is Friday at 10:00 Friday – all at Resthaven Funeral Home on Bardstown Road.

Elsie Deutsch's and Doris Farmer’s sister-in-law, Thelma Farmer, died yesterday. Thelma is married to Kenneth Farmer, and they are among the founding members of Southeast Christian Church. Calling hours are today (Wednesday) from 3 to 8, at Fern Creek Funeral Home. Funeral is Thursday, 11:00 am. The Rev. Bill Deutsch, Elsie’s son and Beulah Church child who is a Presbyterian Pastor (now serving near Paris, Kentucky) will be leading that service in memory of and celebration for the life of his Aunt Thelma.

And our prayer list is growing a bit too:

I talked with Bob Tackett this morning; a CAT scan has discovered two tumors in his abdomen, and he is waiting word on surgery, which he and all hope is very soon. Bob faced cancer before in his kidney, which was removed a number of years ago. Let us pray mightily for successful surgery for Bob, and pray for Jane as well.

About two weeks ago now Terry Watson was the victim of a hit and run car accident. The car was found, with someone passed out in the back seat (likely drunk) but the driver was nowhere to be found. Terry is healing from lots of bumps and bruises, but was not severely injured. Now she is dealing with the justice system and insurance and she needs our prayers.

Dwayne Rutledge is facing some surgery on Monday morning. Dwayne is married to Carrie Wood Rutledge, daughter of Bob and Carla Wood.

Charlie Stirsman is facing surgery a week from Monday – to repair, as he put it, his “after market” kneecap which has come loose.

Don Pierce is facing some surgery at the end of the month, I think July 30th.

Doug Jones has asked that we pray for friends of his, Rick Torbik, and Rick’s partner Jim Sutherlin. Jim is struggling with adenocarcinoma, an aggressive type of lung cancer; hospice is on the scene. These friends live in Florida.

Jeannie Koerber has appointments with three doctors this week, and is hopeful for some good news and more relief.

Jim Barbour is back to work here and is feeling better.

Christie Tompkins will be visiting with her folks this weekend, and asks that we continue to pray for her grandma, Ruby Rice.

Please also keep Carla Wood and the Preschool in your prayers as they search and interview candidates for two teaching positions. As you may remember from my sermon last Sunday, Sheryl Stokes, member here and teacher for 17 years, has accepted a new position, full time, working with sexually abused preschoolers. I’m sure she would appreciate a prayer for her as well as she begins this new position.

A number of our High School juniors and seniors will leave for Triennium on Tuesday morning (with advisors Terry Hargrave and Jane Flanigan), and a number of our Middle School youth will leave for the Middle School Youth Conference on Wednesday morning (leaving way too early in the morning, and with advisors Jim and Terry Watson and Judy Hockenberry). Prayer for safe travels and for a growing faith experience for these youth and the adults as well.

Blessings on you all this Wednesday afternoon – and I hope to worship with many of you Sunday. I remain, always,

Yours in Christ,

Ken H.
